- Return home promptly. Rest the area of the operation. Elevate this area if possible. Apply an ice pack for 10-15 minutes to reduce swelling. This can be repeated after 1 hour. Apply moderate compression if possible. These measures will all help to reduce pain, swelling, and bleeding. Some pain, swelling, and bruising is to be expected.
- If bleeding continues, apply continuous compression for 30 minutes. If bleeding still continues, call the doctor, or go to a hospital Emergency room.
- Keep the wound dry for 48 hours, unless instructed otherwise. Change the outer bandage if it becomes dirty, wet, or excessively bloody.
- Take the prescribed pain relief medication, especially for the first 2-3 days, if you experience any significant pain.
- Wound infection is a possible complication. This is usually associated with the wound becoming more painful, swollen or excessively red and warm, 24-72 hours after surgery. In addition you may experience fever, chills, shakes or an unwell feeling. If this happens call the doctor or go to a hospital Emergency room.
- If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed.
- Avoid Aspirin, for 3 days after surgery. Take Tylenol instead, if needed.
- Avoid tobacco for at least 7 days after surgery.
- Book a follow-up appointment for wound care and suture removal, before you leave the office.
