1. Return home promptly.  Rest the area of the operation.  Elevate this area if possible.  Apply an ice pack for 10-15 minutes to reduce swelling.  This can be repeated after 1 hour.  Apply moderate compression if possible.  These measures will all help to reduce pain, swelling, and bleeding.  Some pain, swelling, and bruising is to be expected.

2. If bleeding continues, apply continuous compression for 30 minutes.  If bleeding still continues, call the doctor, or go to a hospital Emergency room.

3. Keep the wound dry for 48 hours, unless instructed otherwise.  Change the outer bandage if it becomes dirty, wet, or excessively bloody. 

4. Take the prescribed pain relief medication, especially for the first 2-3 days, if you experience any significant pain.

5. Wound infection is a possible complication.  This is usually associated with the wound becoming more painful, swollen or excessively red and warm, 24-72 hours after surgery.  In addition you may experience fever, chills, shakes or an unwell feeling.  If this happens call the doctor or go to a hospital Emergency room.

6. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed.

7. Avoid Aspirin, for 3 days after surgery.  Take Tylenol instead, if needed.

8. Avoid tobacco for at least 7 days after surgery.

9. Book a follow-up appointment for wound care and suture removal, before you leave the office.
